The Millennium Dome is an awesome construction, the largest
of its kind in the world. It is over one kilometre in circumference
and covers over 80,000 square metres the Greenwich Meridian Line,
runs through the site.
The Dome is supported by 43 miles of high-strength cable, which
holds up 10,000 square metres of fabric. The translucent roof is
50 metres high at the centre and strong enough to support the weight
of a Jumbo Jet.
The Dome could contain two of the Atlanta Georgia domes or the
Eiffel Tower on its side. You could even fit the Great Pyramid of
Giza inside it!
On the night of 31 December 1999 the eyes of the World were on
Greenwich as it was Greenwich Mean Time that determined that the
World had moved into the Year 2000.
From
the end of the Millennium Experience, which only lasted for the
year 2,000, this great structure is now up for sale. Various ideas
have been put forward and we all await the outcome.
